Effective Ways to Remove Pet Stains From Surfaces in Your Home

Nov 05, 2019

What You Need To Know

If you’re a pet parent, there’s no denying that you love your fur babies. You dote on them, buy them treats, and treat them as part of your family. You get them the best food, the best toys, and the best care possible. No matter how well-trained and well-groomed your furry friend is, however, pets will be pets. They’re bound to be noisy, messy, and stinky. When the family dog spots the trash, he will excitedly rummage through it. When the cat gets bored, she may decide to gnaw on a houseplant and vomit all over your carpet. Pets are fun, but clean-up definitely is not.

Even if pet stains don’t bother you anymore, you still have to remove them in order to keep your home clean and sanitary. Perhaps you have friends visiting or are looking to sell your house. Cleaning pet stains can be bothersome and frustrating, which is why it’s crucial for every pet owner to know a few tricks. Here are some quick and effective ways to eliminate pet odour and remove those unsightly stains:

Poop Stains
Whether you forgot to let your dog out or he had a bite of something that disagreed with him, there are times when your furry friend may have an accident. Cats are naturally inclined to do their business in private, but there may also be times when you forget to clean their litter box. A medical condition can also cause them to poop elsewhere, such as on your favourite rug. How do you clean and sanitize these stinky stains? Here are our steps:

Step 1: The first step to cleaning out poop stain is the nastiest part: picking it up. You can use a dustpan, but remember to clean it too after the job. Unfortunately, it’s easiest to use your hands—just remember to use a pair of disposable gloves.

Step 2: The next step of removing your pet’s stain is treating it with a powerful cleansing solution. If you’re not using a commercially bought cleanser, you can make your own. Just mix warm water, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a few tablespoons of dishwashing liquid.

Pour a small amount onto the stained area and let it soak for three to five minutes. Afterward, wipe it off using a damp cloth. Depending on the poop’s consistency, you may have to repeat this step until the stain is gone. Avoid scrubbing the surface as it may fade or leave scratch marks.

Step 3: Most of the time, a poop stain will leave an unpleasant odour. You may not smell it, but your pets can. They will remember this spot and make it their new toilet. Therefore, you will need to neutralize or absorb the smell. There are commercial air fresheners or sprays for this job. You can also go all-natural and mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle.

Step 4: Once the spot is dry, you’ll need the vacuum the area to remove any stain residue. If you notice that the stain is returning, this means the poop has already soaked into the carpet padding. When this happens, you may have to repeat all the steps all over again or resort to stronger cleaners.

Urine Stains
Cats and dogs usually pee in the worst places—such as in carpeted corners or on walls—when they’re sick or stressed. Once you spot the accident, make sure you clean it up as soon as possible. When unaddressed, the stain will sink in and leave your rug with an awful stench. Here’s how to clean the stain:

Step 1: Once you’ve found a urine mark, blot out as much urine as possible using old towels, newspapers, or paper bags.

Step 2: Next, wipe the area using a rag with a cleansing solution. Alternatively, you can mix cold water and vinegar. Vinegar will break the urine’s acidic compound and neutralize the foul odour.

Step 3: After you’ve applied the cleansing solution, wash the stain spot using the same solution you would use for a poop stain. Allow the area to dry and vacuum it carefully.

Follow these steps to keep your home looking and smelling fresh all the time. For stubborn smell or stains, it’s best to call professional help. Cleaning services use specialized tools and equipment to tackle even the toughest pet stains.
